About Us

The Egyptian Mau leapt into my awareness at a CFA cat show in Denver, Colorado, April, 1994.  I was totally smitten with that cat.  It was love at first sight.  She had black spots on white background and pale green eyes made all the more exotic by black mascara lines.  This was precisely the cat I had been visualizing for a number of years.  The cat I had been dreaming of actually existed:  the Egyptian Mau!  I followed that silver Mau from ring to ring, totally smitten with her and spoke at length with her owner about the breed.  Thus began what has become a long-term love affair with these green-eyed living relics from an ancient past.

Finally, in December, 1996, my first Egyptian Mau, PR Kikori Nut Lunar, came to live with me, and promptly pounced, chortled and cuddled her way into my heart. I exhibited her the following summer just for the fun of it and have been hooked on showing cats ever since.  Showing has given me the opportunity to “do” something outside the house with my cats.

House in the Country

Located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Consuelo Cats is a private, non-commercial hobby cattery registered with the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) and The International Cat Association (TICA).

Our purpose is to exhibit the Egyptian Mau and preserve these rare cats.  We are fervently dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the health, temperament, and beauty of this ancient breed and have worked diligently to establish a unique combination of foundation lines.

The name of our cattery is Consuelo (pronounced con-sway-lo) first because it has been a nickname in the past and also because it derives from the Spanish verb “to console” which is exactly what these cats do.  The Egyptian Mau cheers the spirit and soothes the soul.  I have never encountered a more intuitive cat; one that understands and responds to its human’s moods so easily.

This endeavor of breeding and showing cats has proven to be much more than simply putting two cats together and selling kittens.  It has been an educational journey and continues to be a multifaceted creative outlet and a great way to have fun and make new friends.
